Hi Friend of The River Fund Maine,

Crisp mornings, bright foliage, and a bustling village. All precursors of the winter season soon to come. With school back in session, we’re delighted to have two students from Gould Academy donating their time and resources for their “Senior Four Point”. Gould Academy’s Four Point Program starts in the ninth grade and ends upon graduation. For their final year, students choose an independent service project that they are passionate about.

Sofia Stasinos, a Summer 22’ volunteer with The River Fund Maine has a strong passion for alpine sports. Spending her winters skiing and boarding with family & friends being some of her fondest memories. Making sure more young people in our community have the opportunity to be on snow is why she’s trying to collect and donate 100 pairs of gloves/mittens and 100 neck warmers/hats from her school community to make sure local youth receiving the Community Access Pass have weather appropriate clothing for the winter season.

This Fall Festival Gould Academy Senior, Lily Winch, is fusing her artistic talent and affinity for the mountain to create upcycled trail map origami. Lily’s artwork will have its own booth at the South Ridge Craft Fair this Fall Festival, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting The River Fund Maine programs.

.5K Dry Land Training - October 8, 2022

The days are shorter, and nights cooler. Snow, made and natural, will soon coat the slopes of Sunday River. As you fit-check your gear, and dust off the Thule, the pre-season prep work has just begun. Following The North American Wife Carrying Championship, The River Fund Maine will transform South Ridge Base Area into the dry land training experience necessary to prepare for the 22/23 season. 

The River Fund Maine Scholars - Fall 2022 Update

Luci Rothwell 20' 

This semester consists of many clinical courses, with labs that give us hands-on experience with a variety of clients ranging from those who need rehabilitation after a surgery to children with developmental or learning disabilities. I am also completing a fieldwork placement in the Hampden School Department, observing and participating with children from two elementary schools throughout the course of this semester. I am really looking forward to learning more about pediatrics during this placement!

Dylan Greenberg 21'

By far my favorite class is Assembly and Embedded Programming, which is all about ARM assembly running on very small microcontrollers (small computers that run a single program). It requires direct CPU and memory interaction, provides only the most basic instruction set, and is the most interesting form of programming I've ever done.  For a personal project, I'm slowly designing an original, fully 3d printed nerf gun.  It probably won't be done for a while simply due to workload, but it's a fun thing to chip away at here and there.

Bailey Fraser 22'

I have been loving all of my classes! My favorite class by far is Cinema and Society. In this class my professor teaches us film making techniques and then we observe them in award winning films. At the end of the semester, I will have seven days to create my own short film! Campus life is very exciting! I joined the radio station (91.3 FM WUNH Durham) and I am now in training to become a DJ with my own show!

Community Access Pass

The River Fund Maine is proud to partner on a new season pass scholarship program for local area students in collaboration with Sunday River Resort and the Sunday River Ski & Snowboard Club. Students in MSAD 44, MSAD 17, and RSU 10 can apply for a pass through our online application until November 15th!

We are thrilled to already have over 300 skiers and riders signed up! We're excited to be collaborating with the Bethel Outing Club on the upcoming ski swap at Gould Academy the last weekend of October, helping us ensure those who need have weather appropriate clothing and functional gear for the season. Please don't hesitate to reach out (noah@riverfundmaine.org) if you'd like to donate new or gently used gear.

Maine West Project Play 

Continuing our work with Mahoosuc Kids Association, Gould's Nordic Team has been volunteering as mentors and joining in on the fun with MKA students this Fall, and we;re excited to have Gould Cycling joining for a 4 week mountain bike clinic with MKA students starting this week. 


Our second community game night this September at Telstar HS/MS was a success, and we look forward to another of these monthly, moving, family outings. 


Planning is underway with Inland Woods and Trails to design and install a disc golf course at the Bethel Community Forest.  More collaboration in the recreation space is a great thing for our community. 

A whirlwind summer fastwards to fall. The summer was filled with belly laughs at our annual Par 3 Party, and countless moments of gratitude as we launched our first programs in the recreation space, with the help of many community partners. As our organization continues to grow, I reflect on how lucky we are not only to enjoy this beautiful mountain playground, but to have such a deeply rooted, collaborative, community.
